Ebonics, Text Speak, Abbreviations. Does No One Use Proper Grammar Anymore?

Bad grammar is something that drives me insane, really. Does no one ever proof read their posts or comments? I do let a lot slide because I know that people are trying to do things quickly to pack the most stuff into their little bit of blog love time, but please proof read your posts. Please?

I have felt for a long time that kids do not have any idea how to actually compose a proper paragraph, much less a sentence these days. And with the advent of text messaging and most everything else associated with the digital age, they apparently don't feel they need to do so anyway. Why they were even going to teach Ebonics {a made up street "language" that is "spoken" by many African-Americans and thought to be a real cultural "tradition"} in some Northern California school districts!

Imagine my surprise when I visited LadyStyx's blog this morning and found this little ditty by Sister Salad. I was laughing so hard, I almost peed my pants.

I sent this over to Trisha at
MomDot because she was razzed last year about the grammar, or lack thereof, in her blog posts. She got this posted up before I did. DRATS! But because not every one of my readers visits either MomDot or LadyStyx, I decided I would post it as well. I think it's hilarious and quite clever. I hope you enjoyed it.

Love it. I try to watch mine....occassionally...if I find them later...I will go back and fix them....I too can't stand bad grammar....also hate talking IM. My students do that a great deal....on formal papers...like it is ok to do this. I had one last week turn in a paper with GMD? on it. I had no clue what this meant....so I had to ask....GMD? Get My Drift? Who would have thought that....certainly not me!

Funny story about Ladystyx and me, a while back she and I were critiquing each other's posts for grammar errors and letting each other know. Now we only mention it if it's egregious.

We do throw in the occasional LOL or LMAO and even an OMG, but I usually only do it once I know the blogger knows that it means. Some of us used to chat together, that's how we "met", so I could do a whole comment in chat lingo and they'd understand me, YKWIM?

TTYL! Muaaahhhh!

I totally agree! Especially when a blogger is doing a paid review. Shouldn't they have enough professional courtesy to make sure the post is readable?

That is funny stuff. I'm afraid I have been guilty of violating many of their spelling and grammar rules but it least it is not intentional.

That video is BEYOND hilarious. I get annoyed with spelling and punctuation errors too.

Mostly I don't like when people leave out commas, because it literally makes the sentence hard to read. Even worse than comma placement errors, though, are errors with homophones and homonyms. I want to scream when I read the word your when the correct spelling in that context is you're, or when I read the word there when the correct spelling in that context is their.

Having said that, I will admit to using LOL, HAHA, and OMG pretty often. The OMG is not needed, I just am in a habit of doing that now. On the internet, sometimes things can be misread, though. So, I use LOL and HAHA to make sure people know I was being silly, funny, or sarcastic. Sometimes leaving out a LOL online can lead to a fight. Stupid, but true.

That is so true. I have a spell corrector plug-in on my browser. It helps me to see when I have overlooked misspelling something. Sometimes you read something 3 times and get 3 different meanings. That is so annoying!
Thanks for posting this, it is too funny!
