She had so many children, she didn't know what to do!!
Last week, a woman in my neck of the woods gave birth to octuplets. This is significant because they are only the second set of "live" octuplets to be born in the U.S.. The story has even gone international. When this was first announced, we knew nothing about the mother because she wished to remain anonymous. All we did "know" was that her "husband" worked as a civil servant in Iraq, she was 29 years old and they had 6 other children. Now we know this was not entirely accurate.
It turns out that this woman, Nadya Suleman, is a single 33 year old mother, self described "professional student" and lives with her parents. Nearly all of her children were conceived using In-Vitro Fertilization. It is her Father who works in Iraq and her Mother who is taking care of her children. This woman lives off of government school grants and her parents. Her choices have already caused her parents to lose their home, move in with their daughter (in the TWO bedroom bungalow THEY bought her two years ago) and grandchildren, one of whom is Autistic, and have to file for bankruptcy. The Grandmother, Angela Suleman, has already stated that she will not "be there" when her daughter comes home from the hospital.
While I have no problem with women using fertility procedures to get pregnant, if they have no other alternatives, I do, in fact, have a problem with a single unemployed Mother doing it when she already has SIX children. She now has FOURTEEN kids all under the age of eight. Are you kidding me with this? When I was told I had Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome and would never conceive naturally, I agonized over whether or not to use Fertility procedures. First, what if I took the Clomid and ended up with 7 babies (whatever is the strangest side effect of any drug, the 1 in a million, I GET IT!)? I know I would have been asked to do "selective abortion" in order to up the chances of carrying to term and not endangering my life or the lives of my remaining, viable unborn babies. This was not a choice I would have been willing to make. I could not have played God with my children's lives. But if it happened that I became pregnant with multiples and I did nothing, then I could risk having babies with severe disabilities or lose them all. Knowing this was a possibility was heart wrenching. I just couldn't do it. So I avoided fertility drugs altogether.
Then there was IVF. I could have all the hormones, have my eggs extracted and fertilized in a petrie dish with my Husband's sperm, have them implanted and hope one "took". This procedure could also produce a multiple pregnancy. There was also the little problem of how much this would cost. I called our Health Insurance Company to find out what was covered and was told that most of the treatments were, but there was a higher than normal co-pay. Yeah, like 5000% more! So that was out of the question. It was just too much money and there were too many variables involved that I wasn't equipped to deal with. {I ended up getting pregnant in 2004, by the Grace of God without the use of Fertlity drugs. We weren't even trying at the time, so it was a miracle!}
What I am trying to say here is how does an unemployed, single woman pay for IVF? Where did she get the money? Welfare? Did Medi-Cal cover this? Because Medi-Cal won't cover depression or ADD meds without making you jump through hoops of fire first! I am confused. And I am appalled at this woman. Her own Mother said she has "an obsession with babies". She manipulated a fertility doctor into implanting EIGHT embryos in her womb (or found an unethical one) when the regulations state that THREE is the maximum that can be implanted at any one time.
Now this woman is fishing for lucrative television deals and plans to become a "television childcare expert"! Are you really kidding me with this? Come on, REALLY? Ms. Suleman is planning on talking to Oprah (who else?) and Diane Sawyer. She wants sponsorships for diapers and formula. I have a novel idea, why doesn't she get the Daddies of her FOURTEEN kids to pay child support, get herself into some intense therapy, get herself fixed and get off her ass and get a job so she can stop sponging off her parents and the failed California economy. SHE chose to have the babies, SHE needs to take care of them and not expect others to pick up her slack.
This whole story just infuriates me. She has an Autistic child who needs specialized care, nobody knows yet if her newest "litter" are all completely healthy and she is hiring a publicist and asking for hand-outs from her hospital bed???? PLEASE! This woman obviously has some "issues" that needed to be addressed well before she became a Mother. But since that did not happen, she needs to do it now before she completely screws up the innocent children she already has!
I have no qualms with people having big families, as long as YOU can take care of them without government hand-outs. Once you make the choice, the consequences are also yours. The good, the bad and the ugly. Babies are not dolls to be dressed up and shown off. They are precious, human gifts from God who need to be loved, nurtured and raised the right way so that they become good, compassionate, productive members of society.
I pray that these poor babies do not just become another statistic.
