I Finally Got Tagged!!! Oh, Y'All Are In For It Now!!!

Cheryl over at non compos mentis nominated me for a Kreativ blogger award. Two awards in less than 48 hours...WOO HOOO!!!

OK, six random things about myself? Are you sure you really want to know?? Don't blame me when your eyes start bleeding & you need therapy...you asked for it!

1) Severed fingers & body parts don't bother me. At all. I have had patients hand me severed fingers in Ziploc baggies filled with ice. No biggie.

2) When I was pregnant with my daughter I had a dream that I had given birth to the alien from "V" (a mini~series from the eighties)! Damn pregnancy hormones!!! I also had a dream that my husband gave her to someone else & I was stuck in the bed & couldn't get out to go get her back. It turned out that she had meconium aspiration (bowel movement in the womb that she breathed in) at birth & was put in the NICU at another hospital (my "birth" hospital did not have one) for 18 days & I was in the other hospital away from her for the first 2 1/2 days of her life. How's that for prophetic!!??

3) My birthday is also my Dad's birthday and my parents anniversary! And NO it was not a shotgun wedding, I was born on their 7th anniversary (2 weeks late).

4) I originally wanted to name my daughter Rhiannon Siobhan because I thought it was a cool cross between my name (Shannon) & my husband's name (Ray), but my Godmother said it sounded like a ticket taker at a movie theater in South Central L.A.!! It's an Irish/Gaelic name but it apparently sounded too "black" for her taste.

5) I am a Libertarian who is registered as a Republican.

6) I loved my job at the prison. Those inmates are highly entertaining! It was the Mental Health Department, after all!!

The Awe & Wonder Of Childhood

Yesterday afternoon, my daughter amazed me once again. She didn't accomplish any incredible feats or master a foreign language. No, she discovered prismatic light.

As the late afternoon sun shone through the bathroom window & bounced off the mirror, it produced a small, full prism of color on Rowan's bedroom door. She was enchanted.

When she saw it, she excitedly asked me "Mommy, what's that?"

"It's a prism, baby," I answered.

"Oh, wow!", she exclaimed, "Look, Mommy, it's moving!", as she moved her door back & forth.

"Look, Mommy. There's red," she announced, as she found the color in the prism.

"Very good, baby. Now can you find the purple?"

"There's purple! And blue. And green. And what's that color, Mommy?"

"That's orange, goober. What is this color?," I asked, as I pointed to the yellow.

"Yellow! That's yellow, Mommy!"

"Very good, Rowan. You are so smart!"

"I am?"

"You are."

"Oh, thank you, Mommy!"

"Your welcome, baby!", I said, as she gave me a big hug & a kiss.

She then put her tiny palm on the gem of light & was immediately dazzled by the spectrum now appearing on her fingers. As she lifted each one up & saw the different hues reappear on the door behind them, her eyes became so luminous, it was as if they were ablaze with the full intensity of the sun. She continued to manipulate her hands & fingers this way & that, trying to see every angle of color possible, until the sunlight waned & the prism was gone.

"Oh, no! Mommy it's all gone!"

"I know baby, but the sun went down too far."

"Yeah."

"Maybe we will get another one tomorrow. OK?"

"Yes, Mommy. OK. That was fun, Mommy. It was so pretty!"

"Yes it was, honey."

"OK. We try again tomorrow."

"Yes, baby. Tomorrow."

I witnessed the innocence & purity of first discovery. I observed the awesomeness she experienced after finding something never before seen. I felt the warmth & pride of a Mother's heart as I watched it unfold. I experienced overwhelming joy after seeing the look on my child's face. The awe & wonder of childhood...If only they could stay that pure forever!

This was Rowan's 1st Birthday Party. She got her own cake, so we put her in just a diaper & let her have at it!

She was covered in bright pink & purple icing! I even had to clean it out of her ears!

This contest is worth $500 in groceries, so I am doing my best to win. If we become a finalist, then go over to 5 minutes for Mom & vote for us. Come on, how could you refuse that face!!

Yes, I changed my template. I hated the one I had, but it was the best one I could find. And it is Autumn, one of my two favorite seasons (the other is Winter). Isn't this template pretty, though? It was free at Simply Fabulous Blogger Templates. Lena is an amazing artist & designer. And she does custom templates as well for a very reasonable price. Really, I am not kidding. Go check her out. The templates are simply gorgeous!



She is making me a custom template as we speak. Let me just say that I have seen the preliminary work she has done for me & WOW!! I cannot wait until it is finished & installed. I will finally have the unique template I have been dreaming of & I didn't have to get a loan or max out a credit card to do it!
